AFIDEP-led Alliance for Evidence and Equity in Policy-Making in Africa trains Health staff on Evidence-Informed Policy-Making in Kenya

The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP)-led Alliance for Evidence and Equity in Policymaking in Africa (AEEPA) Project conducted a five-day training session with Kenya’s Ministry of Health in Machakos County beginning July 28, 2024.

The training was aimed at advancing the evidence, and equity use in reproductive health sector policy-making processes in Kenya through strengthening individual and institutional evidence synthesis and translation capacity and facilitating national, and sub-national knowledge exchange and learning.

Kenya Health Sector Strategic Plan 2018-2031

The strategic focus of the health sector in 2030 (Government of Kenya, 2012) and the Kenya Health Policy 2014–2030 (Ministry of Health, 2014a). The Kenya Vision 2030 aims to transform Kenya into “a globally competitive and prosperous country with a high quality of life by 2030”, while the Constitution introduces critical  principles related to the right to health and devolution of the management of health services.

Kenya National Climate Change Action Plan 2018-2022

Climate change has increased the frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events in Kenya causing loss of lives, diminished livelihoods,  reduced crop and livestock production, and damaged infrastructure, among other adverse impacts. An example is the torrential rains and severe flooding from March to May 2018 that devastated communities that were already struggling to recover from a prolonged drought.

Adolescents on the other hand make up 24% of the country’s total population (9.2 million). Nonetheless, they experience some of the poorest reproductive health outcomes in  the country.

Kenya National PHE Strategic Plan for Kenya 2018-2022

The National Council for Population and Development coordinated an assessment of the state of Population,  Health and Environment integrated approaches that was conducted by the University of Nairobi and the Kenya  PHE task force between October 2006 and April 2007 with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This was a comparative study of population, health, and environment  integration and cross-sectoral collaboration in East Africa.
